Safari Day 3: Transfer to Serengeti, game drive en route. The entire drive from the Ngorongoro Crater rim, descending the Ngorongoro Highlands on the vast Serengeti Plains, is a game watching opportunitiy. You'll see the colorful robes where people of the Maasai tribe herd their cattle and goats in the Ngorongoro Highlands - often right alongside wildlife. Then, as you enter the Serengeti National Park borders, villages end and wildlife roams even more in abundance. Day 1 – Pick up from your lodge/hotel in Arusha or Moshi area. We’ll drive 2-3 hours from to Tarangire National Park, a famous dry season game park that is great this time of year. Tarangire is a famous dry-season wildlife location, because many animals gather around the water sources – usually including large herds of elephant. Along the way we will visit a Maasai boma (village) and stop for a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park. Lake Manyara is home to many types of animals including the famous tree-climbing lions. The drive up the Ngorongoro Highlands to Ngorongoro Crater’s Rim is an adventure in itself. Animals are often spotted along the way - wildlife as well as the herds of cows, goats and sheet that the local Maasai pastoralists herd right next to the wildlife. Often you can spot Maasai herders from far away as their colorful robes contrast with the green grass around them. Our safari vehicles descend the narrow road down into the Ngorongoro Crater to explore the crater floor. There are open plains, lakes, and small forests in this self-contained ecosystem. The Crater is world-famous, and for good reason! Many animals can be seen here year-round, including the elusive Rhino. Day 5 – The itinerary will vary a bit depending on one's flight schedule. If you are on the evening KLM flight you can have a morning coffee plantation walk near the Lodge, and can stop in a colorful village market or gift shop if desired. Join Serengeti Pride Safaris for an amazing camping safari adventure through Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit, Lake Manyara National Park, the endless plains of Serengeti National Park, and the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater. This itinerary is designed for adventurous travelers on a budget, who don’t mind simple camping. You camp in public campgrounds with shared public toilet facilities (usually flush toilets, occasionally outhouse type) and public showers (where available; may be cold). If you are not used to this type of camping, we urge you to consider our lodge-based safari trips. There can be animals coming through these camps, so while it is generally very safe, caution must be used – especially for those night-time toilet visits! – and children must be supervised at all times. Meals are served outdoors. Tents are rainproof dome-type tents using sleeping pads (no beds). Bring your own sleeping bag or rent them from us. Tents are provided. Your chef and guide will prepare your meals and clean up, allowing you to relax in camp. Your group will travel in a safari vehicle with a driver and a chef/camp assistant. Safari Day 2 – Serengeti Drive to the Serengeti and your campsite, game drive along the way. It is quite scenic as you ascend into the Ngorongoro Highlands which has colorful Maasai villages as well as wildlife. Then, descend onto the Serengeti Plains where you will see animals en route to the campground. Stop at the Olduvai Gorge Museum to learn a bit about our early human ancestors and fossils found in this area. Overnight at a public campsite in the Serengeti National park.
Safari Day 3 – Serengeti You will spend today exploring the Serengeti ecosystem which flows from Serengeti National park across the invisible line into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Overnight at the same campsite. Safari Day 4 – Ngorongoro Crater Early departure for Ngorongoro Crater to enjoy a game drive inside the Crater today. The Crater is home to a large number of animals – predators and prey, migratory and resident animals including the elusive rhino. It is also quite beautiful and memorable. Overnight at Twiga campsite in Mto wa Mbu village again.
Safari Day 5 – Final day and return to the airport or Arusha Morning village walk with possibility of shopping stops in the colorful village of Mto wa Mbu for inexpensive souvenirs and an interesting experience. For any art or carvings where quality is important, we suggest you purchase in the more upscale gift shops your driver can take you to that have more quality control in place than the informal market in Mto wa Mbu. We can have you back to Kilimanjaro airport for evening flights. If you are staying over, we will drop you at your lodge or hotel in Arusha or Moshi (lodging tonight not included). Day 1: Optional morning visit to a local primary school (donations of school supplies are most welcome, or SPS can facilitate buying & delivering school supplies if you'd like to donate money rather than bring items from home). Outcroppings of rocks and distant mountains provide contrast to the landscape, and acacia trees stand out against the skyline. In February, we expect to the find the great migration of wildebeest, zebra, and other animals around the Seronera (central) and southern Serengeti, both inside the park as well as outside in the Ngorongoro Conservation area around Naabi/Ndutu. Usa River is in a beautiful area between the Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and Arusha city. www.arumerulodge.com Day 2: Game drive in Arusha National Park with 2 hour walking safari with a ranger (if a ranger is available), or 2-3 hour forest or village walk from the lodge and relax and recuperate from your long journey by the pool (walks are optional). Arusha National Park is a small park but beautiful and a bit of a hidden gem, with Mount Meru (Tanzania’s second highest mountain and an inactive volcano) at its center. Day 3: After breakfast, depart for a game drive as you transfer to Serengeti National Park for your safari through its endless plains. Overnight in a public campsite in Serengeti National Park.
Day 4: After breakfast, pack up and depart for the Ngorongoro Crater area. Game drive en route. Overnight at a public campsite on or near the Ngorongoro Crater Rim. Visit a Maasai boma (home) to meet and learn more about these pastoral nomads.
Day 5 Enjoy the world famous Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive and picnic lunch. Transfer to camp at Twiga Camp in Mto wa Mbu.
Day 6 Visit the colorful village of Mto wa Mbu village. The village has a market with souvenirs and art available for purchase, as well as the many beautiful fabrics you see the local peoples wearing. If you are adding on the two day Tarangire safari extension, continue on safari (all meals included today). Otherwise, return to Arusha in time for afternoon or evening flights home (last meal included is lunch today).
Optional 2 day safari extension: Extension Day 1: After breakfast, drive about 2 hours to Tarangire National Park and enjoy a game drive through the rolling savannah studded with baobab trees and wild animals. This is a classic dry season game park where the animals congregate around water sources. Tarangire is well known for having many elephants. Overnight at a public campsite just outside of Tarangire National Park. Please note: during January-March when the migration is in the southern Serengeti, we suggest extending your time there mid-trip rather than visiting Tarangire. Tarangire is best suited to the dry season when the migration is very distant in the Serengeti.
Extension Day 2: Early morning game drive in Tarangire National Park. Return to Arusha for afternoon/evening flights. Prices include all meals, camping fees, driver/guide, cook, park fees (although they are subject to any government increases after the time of booking, which must be passed to clients). Prices exclude airfare, travel visas, beverages except tap water, and tips. Children 15 years of age & younger are discounted when sharing a room/tent with a parent.
